Admitted Student Checklist

Step 1: Obtain an I-20 or DS-2019 Form
If you plan to enroll as an F-1 or J-1 student, go to Obtaining an I-20 or DS-2019 for detailed instructions. If you are currently in the U.S. on a visa other than F-1 or J-1, please contact the International Student Advisor to find out what forms, if any, you need to submit.

Step 2: Make Housing Arrangements

Step 3: Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee
If you are a first time applicant for an F-1or J-1 visa, you are required to pay the SEVIS fee before your visa interview. For more information and to pay the fee, go to

Step 4: Apply for your F-1 or J-1 Visa
After you receive your I-20 or DS-2019 form and have paid the SEVIS fee, you can apply for an F-1 student visa. For a list of U.S. embassies go to . To see the current wait times for appointments and visa processing, go to Visa Wait Times.

Step 5: Make Travel Arrangements
Once you have your visa, you can make your travel arrangements. You may arrive in the U.S. no earlier than 30 days prior to your program start date (item #5 your I-20 form). It is recommended that you arrive no later than 3-4 days prior to the new student orientation. For information on airports and transportation go to Transportation.

Step 6: Prepare for your Trip
Make sure that you put the following in your carry-on luggage: passport, I-20 form, admission letter, and financial support documentation. Detailed information is available at Pre-Departure Information.

Step 7: Check-in with International Student Advisor
Bring your passport, I-20 form and your local address information to the International Student Advisor.
