Weekend of Compassion & Prayer

Interfaith Weekend of Compassion and Prayer for Unaccompanied Migrant Children

On July 11, 2014 Bishop Minerva Carcaño of the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and Bishop J. Jon Bruno of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles issued a call to their churches to observe an Interfaith Weekend of Compassion and Prayer for Unaccompanied Migrant Children from sunset on Friday, July 18th to sunset on Sunday, July 20th.

"We know that many of you join us in being concerned about the urgent humanitarian need at our border and in our communities as thousands of refugee children flee violence and instability, seeking a safe haven here in the U.S." The Bishops wrote

They invited faith communities across Southern California to focus their worship on the needs of unaccompanied migrant children, and to take political action through letter writing campaigns.

On Monday, July 14th, a resource packet was made available to individuals and communities with information to assist with planning worship services and writing letters to public officials.

Claremont School of Theology is responding to the Bishops' call by offering perspectives of faculty and alumni/ae whose scholarship and activism can help to inform individuals and communities of faith as they participate in this weekend of prayer, worship and activism.

Below you will find a series of links to articles and videos from members of the CST community who will share their expertise, experience, and hopes that can provide theological, historical, scriptural, and pastoral context to this present challenge to our country and to our communities.

We hope that you will share these resources with friends, colleagues and communities. If you share these resources over social media, we invite you to use the hashtag #theyarechildren.

We also invite your feedback on these materials, which can be e-mailed to publicrelations@cst.edu.

Blessings to all who will be answering the Bishops' call to a time of compassion and prayer over this coming weekend.
